The beach is calling—sunshine, soft sand, and some much-needed rest and relaxation. But if you're a surrogate, planning that dream vacation takes a little more intention than just tossing a swimsuit and flip-flops into your bag. You're carrying something truly precious—and that deserves both care and celebration.
The good news? You don’t have to skip the vacation. With a few thoughtful adjustments, you can enjoy a safe and soul-nourishing getaway during your surrogacy journey. Here’s how:
Check In with Your Care Team First
Before you book flights or pack your bags, connect with your OB or fertility clinic. Let them know your travel plans—where you’re going, how long you’ll be away, and how you plan to get there. They may adjust your appointment schedule or offer travel-specific advice, giving you peace of mind before you go.
Pick the Right Destination
While a tropical escape might sound perfect, extreme heat and humidity can be uncomfortable (and even risky) during pregnancy. Consider cooler destinations, breezy coastal towns, or a cozy mountain retreat. Even a staycation with spa-like vibes can offer the refresh you need.
Travel Smart and Safely
If you're flying, move around at least once an hour to promote circulation. For road trips, plan for plenty of breaks to stretch your legs. Stay hydrated, pack nourishing snacks, and listen to your body's cues—it’s all part of taking care of both you and the baby.
Honor What Your Body Needs
Pregnancy isn’t the time to push your limits. Whether you’re sightseeing, floating in a pool, or just lounging under a palm tree, give yourself permission to slow down. A quick break and a cool drink can go a long way.
Keep Your Essentials Handy
Bring your prenatal vitamins, medical records, insurance info, and emergency contacts. Having everything within reach means fewer worries and more time to enjoy your trip.
Make Joy a Priority
You're doing something extraordinary—giving the gift of life. Taking time for yourself is not only allowed; it’s essential. Laugh. Relax. Take photos. Make memories. You’ve earned it.
