What Happens if You Get Sick While Pregnant as a Surrogate

ree

When a surrogate becomes ill during pregnancy, it’s important to take extra care to protect both her health and the baby’s. Most doctors provide a list of approved medications and remedies, but options may be limited—especially in the first trimester. Avoid self-medicating with over-the-counter or herbal products unless your healthcare provider has approved them, since safety recommendations can change over time.

Understanding Common Symptoms

Congestion isn’t always a sign of a cold. Many pregnant women experience Rhinitis of Pregnancy, a harmless condition caused by higher estrogen levels and increased blood volume. This leads to swelling in the nasal passages and stuffiness, unrelated to infection or allergies, but still uncomfortable.

Managing Allergies

If you had allergies before pregnancy, symptoms may worsen. Avoiding triggers is key, but your doctor can also suggest safe medication options. Simple, non-medication approaches can help too. For example, propping yourself up with extra pillows may ease congestion and also prevent you from accidentally kicking off covers during the night.

Safe, Non-Medication Remedies

  • Stay well-hydrated.

  • After a shower, remain in a warm, moist environment to ease breathing.

  • Inhale through a warm, damp washcloth for relief.

  • Use saline nasal sprays or drops (without added medications) to clear passages.

  • Run a clean vaporizer or humidifier at night to keep the air moist.

Avoiding Irritants

Stay away from smoke, dust, and chemical fumes. Keeping your home free of allergens like mold and pet dander can also help. When outdoor air quality is poor, choose indoor exercise instead. Enlist the help of family or friends to maintain a healthy environment.
