Common Question: Is Sexual Activity Safe During Surrogacy?

ree

This is one of the most common (and completely valid!) questions we receive from potential surrogates. After all, you're caring for your body and someone else’s future child—so it's natural to want to understand what's safe.

The short answer? In most cases, yes—sex during pregnancy is generally safe for surrogates. But as with many things in surrogacy, there are important guidelines to follow.

🕒 Timing Is Key

If you've recently had—or are preparing for—an embryo transfer, it's best to avoid intercourse for a while. Your fertility clinic will give you detailed instructions, but typically, you’ll be asked to abstain before and shortly after transfer to allow the embryo the best chance to implant securely.

❤️ In a Relationship?

If you're in a committed relationship, both you and your partner will be screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) early in the process. Once you’ve both tested negative and the pregnancy is progressing smoothly, intimacy is usually fine—unless your doctor advises otherwise.

💁‍♀️ What About Single Surrogates?

If you're single, your surrogacy agreement may include specific guidelines. If not, the general rule is to keep things safe and monogamous. Protecting your health and the baby’s well-being is the top priority—so if you're dating or seeing someone, make sure they’ve been tested and are free of infections.

🚫 When Sex Might Not Be Safe

Pregnancy can sometimes come with unexpected changes. If you experience any complications—like cramping, spotting, or other concerns—your doctor might recommend abstaining from sex. Always follow your care provider’s advice, and don’t hesitate to bring up any questions or symptoms.

🌟 Surprising Benefits of Pregnancy Sex

Believe it or not, staying intimate can offer some perks during a healthy pregnancy:

It’s physical activity. Light exercise like sex can help you stay strong and flexible.

It may lower blood pressure. It can support cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of conditions like preeclampsia.

Improved sleep. Struggling to rest? Intimacy can help you relax and sleep better.
