Surviving the Texas Summer: Tips for Surrogates

ree

Summers in Texas are known for their intense heat, with temperatures often soaring above 100 degrees. For surrogates, managing pregnancy during this sweltering season requires extra precautions to ensure their health and the well-being of the baby they are carrying. Here are some tips on how to keep you and your baby safe during the high temps.

Hot weather can bring unique challenges for expectant mothers, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, swelling, and fatigue. By staying mindful and making smart choices, you can enjoy a safe and more comfortable summer.

Tips to Stay Cool & Healthy

💧 Stay Hydrated: Aim for at least 8–10 glasses of water daily — more if you’re spending time outdoors or sweating. Low-sugar electrolyte drinks can help replenish minerals lost through perspiration.

👗 Dress Smart: Choose light, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Light colors reflect heat, helping you stay cooler.

☀ Avoid Peak Heat: The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Stay indoors during these hours when possible, and if you must go out, seek shade, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and protect your eyes with sunglasses.

🧴 Protect Your Skin: Apply a high-SPF sunscreen and reapply regularly, especially after sweating or swimming. Sunburn makes it harder for your body to stay cool.

❄ Keep Indoors Cool: Use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable environment. If you don’t have AC at home, visit air-conditioned public places like malls, libraries, or community centers.

🚿 Take Cooling Breaks: Cool showers, baths, or damp washcloths on your neck, wrists, and forehead can quickly lower your body temperature.

⚠ Watch for Warning Signs: Dark urine, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or extreme fatigue can signal dehydration or heat exhaustion. If you feel unwell, move to a cooler spot, hydrate, and seek medical help if symptoms persist.

🏊‍♀ Choose Gentle Exercise: Opt for indoor activities like prenatal yoga or swimming to stay active while avoiding excessive heat.

🛌 Listen to Your Body: Pregnancy is a time for extra self-care. Rest often, take breaks, and don’t push yourself when you feel overheated or tired.

Caring for Your Emotional Well-being 💗

High heat can also affect your mood, leading to irritability and stress. Make time for calming activities like reading, meditating, or spending time with loved ones. Stay connected with your support network to help keep your spirits up.

Remember — your comfort, safety, and peace of mind are just as important as your physical health. Taking care of yourself means taking care of the baby you’re carrying.
